CIBC Costco Mastercard Review (2026): The Real Cost of Costco's Only Card

Costco's own credit card pays 1% at Costco — its lowest rate — and returns it once a year as a gift certificate you can only spend there. The 3% is for restaurants. Here is what the card actually costs once the membership is counted.

Costco's own credit card pays 1% at Costco. That is its lowest rate, and it is written on CIBC's own product page: 3% at restaurants and Costco gas, 2% at other gas stations, EV charging and Costco.ca, and 1% on "all other purchases including at Costco". The warehouse — the entire reason the card exists — earns the floor rate.

Then the money you earn comes back once a year, as a gift certificate you can only spend at Costco. You earn 1% there and you are paid in store credit redeemable only there.

What is the CIBC Costco Mastercard?

A no-annual-fee cash back Mastercard from CIBC, available only to Costco members. CIBC describes it as "exclusively for Costco members". Additional cardholders are free for up to three people.

The $0 annual fee is real as far as the card goes, and we will come back to why that is not the same as the card being free. The earn structure is where this card differs from how almost everyone describes it.

Where the Costco Mastercard actually earns

Three tiers, and the warehouse sits in the bottom one.

RateWhere
3%Restaurants and Costco gas
2%Other gas stations, EV charging stations, Costco.ca
1%All other purchases, including at Costco warehouse

Read that bottom row again. Costco.ca earns double what the warehouse earns. A restaurant meal earns triple. CIBC's own marketing line is "earn up to 3% cash back" — true, and the 3% has nothing to do with the warehouse.

There is no cap. CIBC states "There's no limit to the total cash back you can earn," which is worth something on a card most people will use heavily in one or two categories.

So the honest description is this: it is a restaurants-and-gas card wearing a Costco badge. If your reason for wanting it is the grocery run, the rate table does not support the decision.

How you get paid — once a year, in store credit

Not monthly cash. An annual Costco cash back gift certificate, arriving in your January statement.

CIBC says you redeem it digitally at Canadian Costco warehouses, or print it through CIBC Online Banking. That is two restrictions stacked on one reward: it arrives once, and it spends in one place.

Both cost you something real. A year of deferral means you are lending CIBC your rewards interest-free for an average of six months. More importantly, a dollar redeemable only at Costco is not a dollar — it is a Costco voucher. If you were going to shop there anyway it is close to cash. If your circumstances change, it is not.

Which raises the question nobody answers: what happens to an unredeemed certificate if you let your membership lapse? CIBC's page does not say, and we are not going to guess. If you are near a renewal decision, get that answer from CIBC in writing before you let the membership run out.

The real annual fee is the membership

$0 card fee, but you cannot hold the card without a Costco membership: $65 for Gold Star, $130 for Executive, plus tax.

Call the card fee-free if you like, but it is only obtainable by paying Costco at least $65 a year. Whether that counts against the card depends entirely on one question: would you be a member anyway?

 Member alreadyJoining for the card
Effective annual fee$0$65–$130 + tax
Cash back needed to break even$0$65–$130
Restaurant spend to get there at 3%—$2,167–$4,333/yr

For an existing member the card is genuinely free, and the 3% on restaurants is competitive with no-fee cards generally. For someone joining Costco to get a credit card, the maths is poor and the better move is a no-fee Mastercard with no membership attached.

One wrinkle if you hold Executive: Costco's 2% Executive reward is a separate certificate from the card's. Costco's own pages disagree on its annual cap — the current Join page shows $1,250 while older pages still show $750 and $1,000 — so confirm the current figure with Costco rather than any review.

Which Mastercard should you actually use at Costco?

Almost any flat-rate cash back Mastercard beats this one inside the warehouse.

At 1% on warehouse purchases, the Costco card is beaten at the till by any card paying more than 1% on general spending — which is most no-fee cash back cards. On $4,000 of annual warehouse spending, the difference between 1% and 2% is $40 a year, paid monthly in usable money rather than annually in Costco credit.

A flat 2% cash back card2%Cash or statement creditTypically monthly

The sensible setup for a Costco member is therefore not one card but two: this card for restaurants and Costco gas, where 3% is strong, and a flat-rate card for the warehouse itself. Compare the field in our cash back list, and run your own split through the rewards calculator.

One caveat we will not paper over: Costco Canada does not publish its in-warehouse accepted card networks on the pages we could reach, and one of its own help pages still lists American Express, which has not been accepted in Canada for years. Check at the till or with Costco before assuming any particular card will work there.

Fees, interest and the fine print

$0 annual fee, $0 for up to three additional cardholders, and no published interest rate.

That last point is not an oversight on our part. CIBC's product page for this card renders unfilled template placeholders where the purchase and cash advance rates should be — the figures are simply not on the page. The foreign transaction fee is not stated either.

For a card aimed at people who pay in full every month, that gap is survivable. If you might ever carry a balance, get the rate from CIBC directly before you apply, and treat any review that prints a confident APR for this card with suspicion.

Who should get this card, and who shouldn't

Take it if you are already a Costco member who eats out. Skip it if you want it for the groceries.

  • Existing members who spend on restaurants. 3% with no annual fee is a good rate, and the membership is already sunk. This is the card's genuine strength and it has nothing to do with Costco.
  • Members who fill up at Costco gas. Also 3%, also strong, and a weekly fill-up adds up faster than most people expect.
  • Households buying the monthly big shop at the warehouse. 1% is the wrong rate for that spending. Use something else for the trolley and keep this card for the restaurant.
  • Anyone considering a Costco membership in order to get the card. You would be paying $65 to $130 a year for the privilege of earning 1% in the shop you just joined.
  • Anyone who wants their rewards in money. This card pays in Costco credit, once a year. That is a real constraint and it is the thing most reviews leave out.

Every rate, fee and payout mechanic above comes from CIBC's own product page for this card and from Costco Canada's own membership material, read on 8 October 2026. Three things we could not confirm at source, and have therefore not asserted: the card's purchase and cash advance rates, which CIBC's page does not render; Costco Canada's in-warehouse accepted card networks, which its own pages do not state; and the current Executive reward cap, where Costco's pages disagree with each other. Frequently asked questions

Is the CIBC Costco Mastercard worth it?

For an existing Costco member who spends on restaurants, yes — 3% with no annual fee is competitive. For someone who wants it for warehouse shopping, no. The card pays 1% at Costco, its lowest rate, and returns it as an annual gift certificate rather than cash.

How much does the Costco Mastercard pay at Costco?

1%. CIBC's own wording is "all other purchases including at Costco", which places the warehouse in the card's bottom tier alongside general spending. Costco.ca earns 2% and Costco gas earns 3%, so the online store and the pumps both beat the shop floor.

Do you need a Costco membership to get the card?

Yes. CIBC describes the card as "exclusively for Costco members". A Gold Star membership is $65 a year plus tax and Executive is $130. That requirement is effectively the card's annual fee, whatever the card's own fee schedule says.

When do you get your Costco Mastercard cash back?

Once a year. CIBC issues an annual Costco cash back gift certificate in your January statement. You redeem it digitally at a Canadian Costco warehouse or print it from CIBC Online Banking. It is not paid monthly and it is not paid as cash.

Does the CIBC Costco Mastercard have an annual fee?

The card's own annual fee is $0, and up to three additional cardholders are also free. But the card requires a paid Costco membership, so the real cost of holding it is $65 to $130 a year unless you were going to be a member regardless.

Is there a cap on the cash back?

No. CIBC states "There's no limit to the total cash back you can earn." That matters more than it sounds, because many no-fee cash back cards cap their bonus categories. Heavy restaurant spending keeps earning 3% here with no step-down.

What happens to your certificate if you cancel your Costco membership?

CIBC's product page does not say, and we are not going to guess at it. Because the certificate can only be redeemed inside a Costco warehouse, a lapsed membership is an obvious risk to an unredeemed reward. Ask CIBC directly before letting a membership expire.

What interest rate does the CIBC Costco Mastercard charge?

CIBC does not publish it on the card's product page — the page renders unfilled template placeholders where the purchase and cash advance rates should appear. Request the rate from CIBC before applying if there is any chance you will carry a balance.

Can you use the Costco Mastercard anywhere?

Yes, it works wherever Mastercard is accepted. Off-Costco it pays 3% at restaurants, 2% at gas stations and EV charging, and 1% on everything else. The restaurant rate is the reason to carry it; the 1% general rate is the reason not to make it your only card.

Which card should you use at Costco instead?

Any flat-rate cash back card paying more than 1% on general spending, which is most no-fee cash back cards. On $4,000 of annual warehouse spending, moving from 1% to 2% is worth about $40 a year — and it arrives as money rather than a Costco certificate.
