BMO Blue Rewards: The 10x Partner Cap Is Reportedly Annual Now
BMO has reportedly moved the Blue Rewards partner cap from monthly to annual — a real gain for lumpy spending. BMO's own benefits guide still shows the monthly cap, so we have not stated the new figures as verified.

BMO has reportedly moved the 10x Blue Rewards partner cap from a monthly limit to an annual one. If confirmed it is a real improvement — but BMO's own benefits guide still describes the old monthly cap, so treat the new figures as provisional until your card terms say otherwise.
The Blue Rewards cards earn a headline 10x points at participating Blue Rewards partners, including Blue Rewards Travel powered by Expedia. That rate has always been capped. What changed is the shape of the cap, and shape matters more than size here.
Monthly versus annual, and why it matters
A monthly cap punishes uneven spending. An annual cap does not. That is the whole story.
Under a $1,000-per-statement-cycle cap, a $3,000 holiday booked with Blue Rewards Travel in one month earns the accelerated rate on $1,000 of it. The other $2,000 drops to the base rate, and the unused allowance from the eleven quiet months is gone — you cannot carry it forward. Partner spending is exactly the kind of spending that arrives in lumps: a holiday, a big shop, a renovation.
An annual cap lets the lumps through. The same $3,000 booking earns the accelerated rate in full, provided you have room left for the year.
What the figures are said to be
| Card | Partner rate | Old cap | Reported new cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMO Blue Rewards World Elite Mastercard | 10x points | $1,000 per statement cycle | $25,000 per calendar year |
| BMO Blue Rewards Mastercard | 5x points | Per statement cycle | $15,000 per calendar year |
On the World Elite, twelve monthly caps of $1,000 allowed at most $12,000 of partner spending at the accelerated rate in a year, and only if it arrived in perfectly even instalments. A $25,000 annual cap is roughly double that ceiling and removes the evenness requirement entirely.
Reporting also indicates Accor Hotels has been added to the partners earning the accelerated rate.
Why we are not stating this as fact
BMO's own benefits guide for the World Elite still says the accelerated rate applies "up to a combined maximum of $1,000 in net purchases posted to your account per statement cycle period." We read that document on 22 August 2026, after the change was reported.
There are two ordinary explanations. Published PDFs often lag a programme change by weeks, and the operative terms may have been updated on the card's own page rather than in the guide. Either way, we are not going to print a cap we cannot find in the issuer's documentation and call it verified — the figures above are what has been reported, clearly labelled as such.
What to do if this affects a decision:
- Check the terms on your own card's page, or your cardholder agreement.
- Confirm the current cap with BMO directly.
- Only then plan a large partner purchase around the annual figure.
If you are relying on the cap being annual, that is worth a phone call rather than a blog post.
Who this helps
- Anyone whose partner spending is lumpy. A single holiday booked through Blue Rewards Travel is the clearest case: under a monthly cap most of it earned the base rate, and under an annual cap it does not.
- Anyone who was quietly hitting the cap every month without noticing. Statement-cycle caps are close to invisible — the points simply arrive smaller, and unless you check the maths on a specific purchase you never see the ceiling.
Full terms for both cards are on the BMO Blue Rewards World Elite and BMO Blue Rewards Mastercard pages, and every BMO card we cover is on the BMO page. If you are weighing this against another points card, the best rewards credit cards in Canada is the wider comparison.
It changes nothing for cardholders whose partner spending is modest and steady. If you were never near $1,000 a month at partners, the cap was not binding on you and still is not.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Blue Rewards partner spending cap?
It is the amount of partner spending that earns the accelerated rate before purchases drop to the base rate. BMO's published benefits guide describes a $1,000 per statement cycle maximum on the World Elite. An annual cap of $25,000 has been reported but we could not confirm it in BMO's documentation.
Why does an annual cap beat a monthly one?
Because unused monthly allowance cannot be carried forward. Partner spending usually arrives in lumps — a holiday, a large purchase — and a monthly cap only rewards spending that is spread evenly. An annual cap accepts the lump.
How many points do Blue Rewards partners earn?
The World Elite card earns 10x points at participating Blue Rewards partners, including Blue Rewards Travel powered by Expedia. That is a base of 1 point per dollar plus a bonus of 9 points per dollar, per BMO's benefits guide.
What happens after the cap is reached?
Purchases at partners continue to earn the card's base rate for the remainder of the capped period. The allowance resets at the start of the next period.
Does this affect the grocery and gas rate?
No. The accelerated rate on eligible grocery, gas and electric vehicle charging, wholesale club and alcohol purchases is a separate category with its own terms, and the reported change concerns the Blue Rewards partner rate.
