Scene+ Points Guide (2026): What They're Worth by Redemption
Every Scene+ route pays exactly one cent a point — except the statement credit, which pays 150 points per dollar. Scene+ publishes both numbers and never puts them side by side. On 10,000 points the gap is $33.33.

Every Scene+ redemption route pays exactly one cent a point, except one. Points for Credit — the statement credit, the easiest route, the one a disengaged member will take — pays 150 points per dollar. That is 0.67 cents, a third less than everything else, and Scene+ publishes both numbers on its own help centre without ever putting them side by side.
On 10,000 points that gap is $33.33. Same points, same account, same afternoon: $100 of groceries, or $66.67 off your card balance.
What a Scene+ point is actually worth
One cent at every partner. Two-thirds of a cent as a statement credit.
| Redemption route | Points for $1 | Cents per point | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cineplex — tickets, food and drinks | 100 | 1.00¢ | No minimum |
| Travel (Scene+ Travel, and travel charged to a Scotiabank card) | 100 | 1.00¢ | — |
| Groceries at participating banners | 100 | 1.00¢ | 1,000 pts ($10) |
| Home Hardware | 100 | 1.00¢ | 1,000 pts ($10) |
| Shell fuel, car wash, select in-store | 100 | 1.00¢ | 1,000 pts ($10) |
| Pharmacy (NS, SK, MB) | 100 | 1.00¢ | 1,000 pts ($10) |
| Dining at participating restaurants | 100 | 1.00¢ | 500 pts ($5) |
| The Rec Room / Playdium | 100 | 1.00¢ | 500 pts ($5) |
| Points for Credit (statement credit) | 150 | 0.67¢ | $20 credit |
Scene+'s own help centre states both rates in the same article: "The redemption rate for Points for Credit is 150 points for $1" and "The redemption rate for travel is 100 points for $1."
So the only decision that matters in this programme is avoiding one button. Everything else — travel, groceries, the cinema, the hardware store — returns identical value. Which route you pick changes nothing except convenience, right up until you pick the statement credit, which quietly costs you a third.
That inverts the usual advice. Most loyalty guides tell you travel is the premium redemption and everyday spending is the waste. In Scene+ they are the same number, and the waste is the route that looks most like cash.
What Scene+ is
A Canadian coalition programme owned by Scotiabank and Cineplex, spanning groceries, cinemas, fuel, dining, pharmacy and home improvement.
It began as Cineplex's Scene card and absorbed Scotiabank's rewards currency, which is why movie tickets still sit at the centre of it and why Scotiabank cards are the fastest way to earn. Tangerine now participates on the banking side as well.
Where you earn Scene+ points
The earn rates vary far more than the redemption rates do — and that is where the programme is actually uneven.
| Partner | Earn rate | Effective return |
|---|---|---|
| Cineplex | 3–6 points per $1 | 3%–6% |
| Scene+ Travel (hotels, car rentals, things to do) | 3 points per $1 | 3% |
| Pharmacy prescriptions (NS, SK, MB only) | 2 points per $1, max 5,000/day | 2% |
| Home Hardware | 50 points per $50 | 1% |
| The Rec Room / Playdium | 1 point per $1 | 1% |
| Shell | 1 point per litre | Varies with fuel price |
| Dining | 1 point per $3 | 0.33% |
Read the dining row against the dining row in the first table. You earn a third of a per cent eating out, and you redeem at a full cent. The asymmetry in this programme is entirely on the earn side — restaurants are a fine place to spend points and close to pointless as a place to collect them.
Shell's rate is per litre rather than per dollar, so its value moves with the pump price: at $1.50 a litre, one point per litre is about 0.67%. Shell Go+ members who link accounts earn 10% more on regular and mid-grade fuel and double bonus points on V-Power NiTRO+.
Scene+ Rakuten pays up to 20% back in points across 600-plus online stores, deposited quarterly at 100 points per $1 of cash back. You cannot redeem at Rakuten — only earn.
How to redeem Scene+ points
At the till with most partners, and retroactively for travel.
The travel route is the one worth understanding, because it does not work like a travel portal. You pay for eligible travel with a linked Scotiabank card, then apply points against that transaction afterwards — up to a year from the purchase date, oldest eligible transactions first. You are not booking with points; you are reimbursing yourself at one cent each.
Cineplex is the most granular route in the programme: 100 points for $1, with no minimum. If you are sitting on an awkward balance, that is where it spends cleanly.
Two warnings from Scene+'s own terms. Points for Credit redemptions are final — they cannot be reversed or refunded, and they cannot be stacked, so each request is separate. Travel redemptions are equally final, and if your balance will not cover the whole purchase, your entire balance is applied to it.
Which Scotiabank cards earn Scene+
Six, from no fee to $599. The fee-free Scene+ Visa is the entry point; the Passport line adds no foreign transaction fee and lounge access.
The Passport Visa Infinite + is the mainstream choice at $150 a year, earning up to 3x on eligible grocery, dining and entertainment, with a Visa Airport Companion membership and six lounge visits a year. The Gold American Express sits at $120 with no foreign transaction fee. Compare them in our Scotiabank list and run your own spending through the rewards calculator.
Is Scene+ worth collecting?
Yes if you shop at its partners anyway. No if you were hoping points would beat cash.
A flat one-cent currency earned at roughly 1–3% is, in plain terms, a 1–3% cash back programme with extra steps and a grocery-aisle redemption. That is not an insult — it is a perfectly respectable return, and the Cineplex and pharmacy rates genuinely beat what a cash back card pays in those categories.
But if you will not track partners, will not avoid the statement-credit button, and would rather have money than groceries, a flat-rate card is the better instrument. Our Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite review covers Scotiabank's cash back alternative, and the cash back list covers the wider field.
Every rate above comes from Scene+'s own "How it works" page and its help centre article on redeeming with Scotiabank, read on 9 October 2026. Two rates Scene+ does not publish per-dollar, and which we have therefore not estimated: gift cards and merchandise, both of which start at 1,000 points. Given that the one route Scene+ does price differently is priced a third lower, we would check the effective rate in the app before redeeming for either.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a Scene+ point worth?
One cent at every partner Scene+ publishes a rate for — groceries, Cineplex, travel, dining, Home Hardware, Shell and pharmacy, all at 100 points per dollar. The exception is Points for Credit, the statement credit, at 150 points per dollar. That is 0.67 cents, a third less.
What is the worst way to redeem Scene+ points?
Points for Credit. At 150 points per dollar against 100 everywhere else, a 10,000-point balance is worth $66.67 as a statement credit and $100 at any partner till. It is also the most convenient route, which is precisely why it costs members money.
Is redeeming Scene+ points for travel better than for groceries?
No. Both are 100 points per dollar. The travel route's only advantage is that it clears a large balance in one transaction, and its disadvantage is that it only works retroactively against travel already charged to a linked Scotiabank card.
How do I use Scene+ points for travel?
Pay for eligible travel with a linked Scotiabank card first, then apply points to that transaction through the Scene+ site. You have up to a year from the purchase date, and redemptions apply to your oldest eligible transactions first. Each transaction can only be redeemed once.
How many Scene+ points do I need for a movie ticket?
100 points per dollar of the ticket, with no minimum redemption at Cineplex. That makes the cinema the most granular route in the programme — useful for clearing an odd balance that cannot reach the 1,000-point minimum most retail partners require.
Can I redeem Scene+ points for groceries?
Yes, at participating banners, from 1,000 points for $10. It is tied for the best rate in the programme at one cent a point, and for most members it is the easiest full-value route. It beats the statement credit by a third on identical points.
Why do I earn so few points eating out?
Because the dining earn rate is one point per $3 spent, or about 0.33%, while redemption is a full cent. Dining is a good place to spend Scene+ points and a poor place to collect them. Put restaurant spending on a card that pays a real dining rate instead.
Can I redeem Scene+ points for gift cards?
Yes, from 1,000 points, across more than 60 brands. Scene+ does not publish a points-per-dollar rate for gift cards, so we cannot tell you what they are worth. Check the effective rate in the app before redeeming — the one route priced differently is priced lower.
How do I earn Scene+ points at Home Hardware?
50 points for every $50 spent, in store at Home Hardware, Home Hardware Building Centre and Home Building Centre, or online at homehardware.ca. That is one point per dollar. Redemption is 1,000 points for $10 off qualifying products and services.
Is Scene+ better than cash back?
It is roughly equivalent, with more steps. A one-cent point earned at 1–3% is a 1–3% cash back programme that pays in groceries and cinema tickets. If you shop at the partners it is fine; if you want money and will not manage redemptions, a flat-rate cash back card is simpler and no worse.
